I Hate Mayo Club

Rachael Ray's talk show recently featured a member of the I Hate Mayonnaise Club. In case you haven't heard this about Rachael - she is a die hard mayo hater. I'm the same way - just seeing mayo makes me cringe and there's none in our house because I really can't even pick up the jar in the store. Icky.

Due to her mayo hatred, Rachael has created several mayo-free dressings. She shared one for spicy salsa salad dressing on her talk show. It couldn't be easier to make: throw a bunch of lime juice, a little EVOO, a pinch of salt and some pepper in a jar with just a bit of salsa in it (this is one of those bottom of the jar recipes). The salsa dressing can be used on shredded cabbage and sliced fresh red bell pepper to substitute for cole slaw. She also poured it over guacamole salad (chunks of avocado, cilantro, red onion, tomato and chopped jalapeno) and put some tortilla chips on top.

You can see video of these recipes here in my new favorite feature of Rachael's talk show website - the food flix gallery.

Rachael also makes lots of unique potato salad recipes that are mayo free. Here are a couple for my fellow mayo haters or for anyone who might want to lighten up a recipe that is usually full of yucky extra mayo calories:

Man, just writing "mayo" over and over again in this post was tough for me....

  2. Anony,

It's okay. You're among friends here. It's perfectly acceptable to be a Rachael Ray fan, despite what the media might tell you.

  3. I know a lot of people who hate mayo but I'm the exact opposite - I freakin' love the stuff! I even dip my fries in it. Yum!

I never knew RR wasn't a fan. She always touts her mayo-free salads on her show as being "picnic-friendly," so I thought that was the reason for everything being mayoless. Now that you mention it, I've never seen her use mayo on anything...you learn something new every day!

  4. Home Cook,

She has just a few recipes with mayo, but she uses it in small amounts. Thankfully.

  8. I noticed the guy doing my order at Subway wipe the knife off, which was coverered with "Southwest Sauce" onto my sandwich. I simply turned and walked out of the store with him yelling "Excuse me, sir!" If he can't figure out why I left, then tough. "Southwest Sauce" is just a fancy name for Mayo, by the way.

  9. I never really followed her on TV, not into the standard cooking show thing. I am now the biggest fan. Mayo is, without question, the worst disaster that ever happened to food. I can't even think about it. Nothing emotionally offends me as much as mayo globbed on a perfectly good sandwich, or worked into some disgusting thing recipie that tries to fool us "normal" people who are nauseated by the very commercials they use to push this toxic substance. Nothing ruins food more than mayo, nothing ruins the appetite more that seeing it, smelling it, or even thinking about it.

  10. I hate mayo, because I hate vinegar.Anybody in the same boat? I don't even let them touch my sandwich at Subway with the knife that has residue from everyone else's sandwich on it.I just tell them not to cut it,but then I have to watch them like a hawk so that they don't use the knife to fold the sandwich over. Those filthy knives are totally disgusting...

  11. Anonymous, YES! I also hate mayo because I hate vinegar! Seems like it's in everything, and those Subway knives are so disgusting. I always want to cry out, "don't touch my sandwich with that knife!!!" And Madeline, I'm the same way, I can't even have it in our fridge, because I can't stand to touch the jar. I think it's almost a phobia. ;)

  14. Keep the Mayo, give me Miracle Whip!

  15. God I hate Mayo and Miracle whip too. Tasteless, slimy, and calorie ridden, containing who knows what other chemicals! The only food item I hate more is having to tell hamburger places "no mayo" otherwise I will get that crap on my burger. Mayonnaise on beef! Disgusting! I thought I was the only one, Yeah for RR I hope this is a beginning of a revolution!

  16. Have you ever had a mayo sandwich???...YUMMY!!!

  17. Regarding the comment directly above, thank you Steve for making sure to include Miracle Whip in your rant. Let's call a spade a spade. Miracle whip is Kraft putting its slimy mayo on the DL. Just another way that "Big Mayo" (Kraft, Heinz and Hellman's) is trying to force this vile substance into western society. They are no bettter than the tobaccco companies. Down with mayo!

  19. Wow I never knew RR hated mayo..I also notices she never uses it and always says picnic friendly or something like that..I to despise mayo and my husband Always tries to get me to eat it...he just doesn't understand because he's a pig that will shove anything into his mouth. Mayo is gross and does nothing but take away from the true favors of your food.

  20. Seriously all y'all? Eat what you like and don't hate on peoples preferences. Hate serial murderers, not condiments.

  21. Rachel just went up three pegs in my opinion. I've always avoided potato salad, chicken or tuna salad, etc... But I'll try Rachel's non-mayo versions!

Up near Boston a lot of people order their roast beef sandwiches "three way" - BBQ sauce, cheese AND mayo. Why they would ruin it with that last one boggles my mind.

  24. People ask me if I'm allergic or just don't like it. I don't get sick, but what it does to me mentally is worse than physical sickness. To me everyone is just putting cat crap on there food. People actually see and smell mayo and their response is, I should put that in my mouth. Can you believe that?
