Rachael Ray's Talk Show Set is a Feat of Engineering

Have you noticed how many celebrities who visit Rachael Ray's talk show mention how cool the set is? With a loft-apartment feel, it's definitely different than anything else on TV. Have you seen an audience sized lazy susan on any other show? Me either.

The uniqueness of Rachael's set caught the eye of Broadcast Engineering magazine. The show is taped at New York City's EUE Screen Gems Studios in New York City, in "a sophisticated 9000sq-ft studio that EUE created specifically for 'Rachael Ray' in its 125,000sq-ft four-floor Midtown Manhattan complex."

Rachael's show films in Studio 6A, which served as the studio for CBS soap opera "Guiding Light" for 20 years. When Guiding Light left, the studio decided to upgrade. Rachael's set was created in only three months "from demolition to first shoot day — the original Studio 6A and its control room were gutted and refitted with all digital equipment, new lighting equipment and a highly innovative, rotating audience platform."

Rachael tapes in the studio two (sometimes three) episodes per day, three days a week. If you've watched the show, you've seen all the main components, including the elevator where Rachael and guests enter the stage and the revolving audience seating area.

One exciting tidbit from the article is that King World (the show's production company) is thinking of offering the show to HD "sometime after 2008." If you would like to know tech-nerd details about all the gizmos and gadgets on the set, check out the full article here.

  1. As a child of TV(I'm 55 going on 56, and I've been watching since I was 18 months old from the crib), I've noticed the RR set is quite different from any in memory. Generally, a turntable is used as a visual prop. Normally, the audience isn't spun around to view different backdrops on any other current show. I'm surprised the show didn't pick up an award for best set design at the daytime Emmys.
